“Accountability August” Hits Hard for Republicans Who Voted for Trump’s Tax Law
Washington, DC - We all saw the protests erupt at Nebraska GOP Rep Mike Flood’s town hall earlier this month, but Flood was far from alone. Populist protests and community actions targeting Republicans in Congress for backing Donald Trump’s signature tax law and other budget cuts to the social safety net abound this summer.
Through these actions, people are keeping the unpopular new law in the news and atop newsfeeds, ensuring that people continue to learn how their elected leaders are putting the rich and corporations over families and local communities:
PENNSYLVANIA
New York Times Report Shows Rep Rob Bresnahan sold off stock ahead of BBB Vote to Cut Medicaid (NYT, Aug 6)
Mr. Bresnahan’s May 15 sale of up to $15,000 of stock in Centene, the largest Medicaid plan provider in the country, also drew scrutiny. Centene’s stock plummeted by about 40 percent after Mr. Trump signed the domestic policy bill into law on July 4.
Mr. Bresnahan has tried to blunt the political peril he is facing from his trading activity, but so far his efforts have fallen flat.

Organizations such as Fair Share America, Action Together NEPA, and Pennsylvanians Together held the town hall at the Green Ridge Club, known for hosting weddings, to "talk about how Bresnahan broke his promises to help the people of his district by repeatedly voting to slash Medicaid and SNAP."

Progressive Lawmakers Urge Special Session to Address Trump’s Cuts, Breaking from Top Democrats (New York Focus, Aug 14)
Progressive lawmakers rallied in lower Manhattan on Wednesday with a message for Governor Kathy Hochul: It’s time for New York to act on President Trump’s federal cuts. Backed by over 60 left-leaning groups, the event called for state legislators to return immediately to Albany and get to work fortifying New York’s safety net.

CALIFORNIA
California GOP lawmaker faces taunts and jeers over Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’ at town halls (CNN, Aug 11)
GOP Rep. Doug LaMalfa drew taunts and jeers at two raucous town hall meetings Monday over his support for President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.” LaMalfa, whose district spans much of the state’s northern interior, is the latest Republican to face harsh in-person criticism, as members of the party attempt to sell Trump’s sweeping agenda back home during Congress’ August break from Washington. LaMalfa calmly addressed audience members throughout both town halls, even as some attendees cursed at him and railed against his support of the president, shouting “Liar!”

Van Orden was speaking at the Pearl Street Brewery to members of the chamber about the Big Beautiful Bill while those gathered outside with signs as they chanted "DVO Must Go." They said the Third Congressional District representative still refuses to meet with his constituents in any town hall setting.
