Fair Share America Responds to Overnight House Passage of a Big Ugly Bill

May 22, 2025

WASHINGTON - Fair Share America Executive Director Kristen Crowell responded to the House scrambling to pass their unpopular reconciliation bill in the dead of night with the following statement:

"The House of Representatives did their dirty work in the dark tonight, but people will know their representatives chose to put billionaires over families. Fair Share America and our partners all around the country will continue to engage people in these communities to make sure of it. I assume these members are ready to face the consequences," said Crowell.

What Speaker Johnson calls “beautiful” is a horror show that will cost millions their health care and raise prices across the board just so billionaires can game the system even more. This is an inflection point, and perspective from outside Washington is crucial to understanding it.

BACKGROUND:

The House passed a widely opposed bill that would:

  • Benefit the wealthy overwhelmingly, giving next to nothing to lower-income households.

  • Kick at least 13 million Americans off of health insurance because of cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act and raises costs.

  • Deprive at least 3 million Americans of food assistance. Other analyses show up to 18 million kids could lose their school lunches.
