GOP Senators Want to Make Even More Medicaid Cuts

New Amendment from Sens. Scott, Johnson, & Lee Would Shrink Medicaid by another $313B – Kicking 20 Million or More Off Of Their Health Insurance

9 states would be automatically impacted: Arizona, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Utah, Virginia

Racine, Wisconsin - A new amendment from Senator Rick Scott (R-FL), Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), would reduce Medicaid spending by another $313 billion by ending Medicaid expansion under the ACA in 9 states that have automatic “trigger laws.” That would put the reconciliation bill’s cuts to Medicaid at a whopping $1.24 trillion – about as much as the bill would deliver in tax handouts for the very richest Americans.

According to an analysis from the Joint Economic Committee, this measure would result in 20 million people losing health insurance – or 29 million people if all states ended their Medicaid expansion programs.

Fair Share America Executive Director Kristen Crowell, who is currently in Wisconsin, traveling the country on the “Stop the Billionaire Giveaway” bus to get the word out about the huge harms the reconciliation bill will bring, released the following statement:

“From Pennsylvania to Wisconsin, I’ve heard people of all ages and backgrounds share how Medicaid was a lifeline for them when they were at their most vulnerable. Donald Trump and GOP Senators like Ron Johnson may think people will forget that they tried to rip health care away from 20 million Americans, but they are dead wrong,” said Crowell.
