Chicago, IL – Fair Share America Executive Director Kristen Crowell released a statement in response to the House of Representatives preparing to vote today to reverse part of Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) and extend ACA premium tax credits in order to keep costs from skyrocketing for millions of Americans:
“The bipartisan votes to overturn one harmful piece of Donald Trump’s OBBBA and extend ACA premium tax credits are an implicit admission of what most Americans have known all along: this law was a grave mistake. Republicans and Democrats alike are now acknowledging that OBBBA leaves already struggling Americans to face skyrocketing healthcare costs and a loss of basic support for those who need it most. Advanced via discharge petition thanks to Democratic Leader Jefferies, this is the only bill with bipartisan support that would keep premiums from skyrocketing; the Senate needs to take it up immediately and pass it as is.
Keeping ACA premiums from rising is the bare minimum—but it shows that when people speak up, Congress can be forced to correct its worst errors,” said Crowell. Congress shouldn’t stop here. Next, Congress must repeal the cruel and unnecessary cuts to SNAP and Medicaid, which are already hurting kids, seniors, and working families, and ultimately undo the massive tax handouts to the wealthy and big corporations that sit at the core of OBBBA. Those tax giveaways have done nothing to strengthen our economy, lower costs, or improve life for everyday people, no matter how often Trump claims otherwise.
OBBBA is a law written for the rich and powerful, leaving the rest of us worse off. It’s up to all of us to keep the pressure on Congress to finish the job—protect families’ health care, restore critical public support, and reject an economic agenda that further rigs the system for billionaires while leaving everyone else behind.”
