Local Ed Boards Across the Country Oppose the House Budget

May 20, 2025

It’s not only constituents that have taken to the opinion pages to forcefully oppose the House Budget’s cuts to essential programs in order to deliver more tax cuts for billionaires – state editorial boards are sounding the alarm as well.

As people held protests, rallies, town halls, call-ins, and turned recess weeks into games of hide and seek with GOP lawmakers, local ed boards have done what lawmakers haven't: they've leaned in.

Amplifying the voices of constituents, detailing the ways in which the House Budget will harm people and local communities, and putting the massive shift of costs onto the state budgets into perspective, editorials have added greatly to conversations in states.

Check out a few highlights:

VIEW FROM THE STATES: EDITORIAL EDITION

Idaho: Idaho Statesman - Editorial: Idaho reps cut benefits for poor, give tax cuts to wealthy, widen deficit

“Cutting benefits from the “blue collar” workers you Republicans supposedly championed during the election is a slap in the face to the people who backed you.”

Florida: Miami Herald - Editorial: Florida seniors could lose access to healthcare if Congress moves ahead with Medicaid cuts

“Medicaid is more than a government program. It’s a lifeline for many Americans, especially Florida seniors citizens. While balancing the budget is important, Congress shouldn’t do it at the expense of senior citizens.”

Kentucky: Lexington Herald Ledger - Federal budget would cut Medicaid, harming Kentuckians. Our GOP Congressmen don’t care

“This is no way to run a government. … This approach is a betrayal of many of the Kentuckians who delivered this state to Trump.”

Massachusetts: The Springfield Republican - Congress is failing America in so many ways

“The GOP plan isn’t a fix. It is a blueprint for increasing – not decreasing – the national debt. It finances unnecessary tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans by cutting Medicaid and SNAP benefits for the poorest people among us.”

Texas: San Antonio Express News - GOP's proposed budget cuts to Medicaid are cruel and would be catastrophic

“If you are concerned about the national debt, this budget plan should make your blood boil…. Such cuts to Medicaid would affect everything from whether children receive complete medical attention, rural hospitals stay open and health care workers keep their jobs to whether the infirm can continue receiving home-based care…..These proposed cuts could truly be the difference between life and death.”

Colorado: The Sentinel - Trump Medicaid cuts would be devastating, affecting all in Colorado

“Don’t be fooled by false Medicaid narratives and empty tropes being promoted by the Trump administration — and fewer and fewer Congressional Republicans every day….Proposed cuts would decimate a wide range of live-saving care for hundreds of thousands of Colorado residents, jeopardize the state’s network of nursing homes and assisted living facilities, disrupt or even destroy rural hospitals and health care, and raise the cost of medical care for everyone.”

Washington: Everett Herald - Editorial: Don’t gut Medicaid for richest Americans’ tax cuts

“Considering the impact to low-income Americans — children; seniors in nursing homes and those scraping by to stay in their own homes; those with disabilities; and the hospitals and medical providers serving all — the waste, fraud and abuse that some are diligently looking for appears centered squarely in an extension of tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.”

Virginia: The Virginian Pilot - Editorial: Youngkin defends Trump even as he’s forced to fix the president’s mess

“Youngkin set aside $900 million in the state budget to insulate the commonwealth from damage. Despite having to take that extraordinary measure, the governor said he continues to support the White House’s actions, even with overwhelming evidence the administration’s policies are hurting the state he leads and the people who elected him. His unwillingness to stand up for Virginia remains inexplicable and indefensible.”
