Local Pressure Grows For Reps Who Voted Against Constituent Interests In House Budget Resolution

March 3, 2025

The directive for Republican members to avoid townhall meetingshasn’t slowed the outpouring of opposition from their constituents following the votes on the House Budget resolution last week.

From grassroots protests at offices, to state editorials, to economic projections that forecast state recession - the pressure is only increasing in the states on Members who voted against their constituents’ interests in order to fund tax cuts for billionaires.

A few highlights of the growing pushback at home on broken promises and misplaced budget priorities:

VIEW FROM THE STATES

Pennsylvania: WHYY - Pennsylvania Republicans who narrowly won their House seats feel the heat of early votes back home

“Newly minted U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan swore he wouldn’t support gutting government benefits such as Medicaid that residents of his northeastern Pennsylvania district rely on. Then the first-term Republican voted for a bill that could do just that.”

Virginia: WTVR - Voters pack meeting to ask Rep. Wittman about his vote and federal budget cuts

“Nearly 200 people packed into a Midlothian American Legion post Wednesday -- bringing anger and questions to a mobile office hours meeting for Republican Virginia Congressman Rob Wittman.”

Arizona: Arizona Republic - Columnist: Arizonans will die to make the rich richer

“We may not know the actual numbers, but we know the impact of deep cuts. People will die. Because that is what happens when the politicians you elect decide to eliminate health care for those who need it, including the elderly and children, in order to give a tax break to billionaires.”

Colorado: Colorado Newsline - Editorial: Gabe Evans can no longer hide that he’d put health care at risk

“Evasion often appears to be Gabe Evans’ primary skill. The new member of Congress from the Colorado district north of Denver has a demonstrated ability to avoid questions on important topics. But votes provide clarity. On Tuesday, Evans supported a federal budget plan that would slash health care funds for low-income Americans to help subsidize tax cuts for rich people…. Now his position is clear: He would cut health care for thousands of Coloradans he purports to represent.”

Iowa: Iowa Capital Dispatch - Iowa groups protest lawmakers’ vote on budget resolution

“Nunn promised to defend Medicaid when he was campaigning, and now he won’t side with the people he made those promises to. He needs to remember who he works for: all Iowans, including the most vulnerable, not unelected billionaires trying to play king.”

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks was also criticized for supporting the measure. She and Nunn, who represent more purple districts than Reps. Ashley Hinson and Randy Feenstra, both had protesters gather outside office locations in Iowa.
