"Stop the Billionaire Giveaway" National Bus Tour Stops in Las Vegas to Hold Lawmakers Accountable for MegaBill Vote

Fair Share America Brought the 14-State National Campaign to Colorado to Highlight the Harmful Impacts of the GOP’s Federal Budget + Tax Bill

Las Vegas, Nevada (July 14, 2025) – Fair Share America, Unrig our Economy, and state partners brought the “Stop the Billionaire Giveaway” national bus tour to Las Vegas yesterday to hold a roundtable on the devastating impact of the just-passed federal reconciliation bill on Nevada’s families, communities and economy.

The 45-foot tour bus, wrapped in a giant trillion-dollar bill, brought together local leaders and business owners to hold lawmakers accountable for their votes for the devastating MegaBill. While some partners were called away at last minute to help the local community through the ongoing raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), those in attendance shared passionate and emotional testimony about what the cuts to essential public services like Medicaid and SNAP will mean for working families in the Las Vegas area and the social workers and elected officials who serve them.

Kristen Crowell, Executive Director of Fair Share America, called out the devastating ICE funding in the new budget:

“This bill empowered ICE to come and take our community members and disappear them. Immigrants pay into the same tax system we all do—over $650 billion annually, including $90 billion from undocumented workers—and now they’re paying to fund their own captors. It’s the most f*cked up thing I can imagine. That’s why this room is more empty than it should be—and why those of us who can stand together must speak up louder than ever.”

State Senator Rochelle T. Nguyen, slammed the federal budget as “a coordinated attack on working families, seniors, children, and people with disabilities,” and outlined the consequences in Nevada:

“Nearly one in four Nevadans rely on Medicaid for health care. That’s 25 percent of our population. Medicaid is not welfare—it's health care. It’s the difference between whether someone can go to work or not. This bill cuts $11 billion in Medicaid from state budgets, including hospitals like Sunrise right down the road. It’s not just bad policy. It’s a moral failure.”

Arzelia Sanford, owner and operator of Spread the Love childcare, spoke about how the bill will directly impact the children and working parents she serves:

“Let’s be clear—this is not about saving money. It’s about taking from the needy and giving to the wealthy. Medicaid helps my families afford doctor visits, vaccinations, and medicine so their kids can even come to daycare. When you cut Medicaid, families are forced to choose between rent and taking their kids to the doctor. Our children deserve better.”

Benita “Bea” Lopez, a social worker and AFSCME member, reflected on the deeper implications:

“We live in a capitalist society, and unless you’re born rich, your only capital is your mind and your body. This bill takes both away. That’s what’s calling people to action, because if our labor is no longer worth anything, then what do we have left?”

“Cutting senior services to fund billionaires is so un-American. People will die because of this bill. And when history asks what I did, I want to be able to say I stood up and spoke out.”

Maria Jacoby, a social worker and AFSCME member, teared up as she described how the cuts will impact her caseload:

“As a public worker, I help families with kids who have severe disabilities. When Medicaid is cut, it’s not just services—it’s people. People like me who advocate, translate, and connect families to the help they need. Cutting public services to give billionaires tax cuts is so anti-American.”

Kristen Crowell closed the event with a rallying message:

“We are not backing down. We are organizing. We are holding every member of Congress who betrayed our communities accountable. And we will repeal the whole damn bill. Mark my words—we’re building something different, and this is just the beginning.”
