ICYMI: 10 Congressional Republicans Could See Personal Tax Benefits Skyrocket While They Refuse to Protect Healthcare for Millions of Americans

WASHINGTON, DC – Earlier today, government watchdog Accountable.US released a new report detailing how ten congressional Republicans stand to pocket up to $328,400 in collective personal tax breaks under President Donald Trump’s Big Ugly Bill. While congressional Democrats fight to avert the Republican healthcare crisis and end the government shutdown, this report offers the most in-depth review of how 10 congressional Republicans, representative of the nearly 70% who personally benefited from the Trump tax scam, put their own tax breaks ahead of Americans’ healthcare. The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) provided the tax policy analysis underlying this report.

Fair Share America Executive Director Kristen Crowell weighed in:

“While millions of Americans are worrying about how to pay for healthcare, Republican lawmakers are using their power to line their own pockets. This report makes clear that the congressional Republican agenda is about helping themselves and their wealthy and well-connected friends, not the people they were elected to represent.”

On September 30, Fair Share America brought together Americans impacted by the healthcare crisis at our “Healthcare Over Billionaires” rally just hours before Republicans in Congress shut down the government after refusing to negotiate with Democrats on extending health care benefits and tax credits.

KEY FINDINGS:

  • 6 Landlords Saved Big: While millions of Americans stress over the growing cost of housing, six wealthy Republicans in Congress with rental properties earned over $3.2 million in pass-through business income collectively in 2024. These members could see a total of up to $236,800 in tax breaks from the Big Ugly Bill.

No surprise there: these lawmakers took big donations from the real estate industry, which spent $20.3 million lobbying for perks in Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.

  • Big, Beautiful Payday: Ten members could see a combined tax benefit of $138,200 to $328,400, with most members seeing a minimum estimated tax benefit in the five figure range.

  • Cash in Congress: 70% of congressional Republicans will likely benefit from their own tax scam. See Accountable.US’s Cash In Congress database to learn more.

“As the Big Ugly Bill strips Americans of access to affordable healthcare, congressional Republicans made sure Trump’s scam looked out for their bottom line, not ours,” said Accountable.US Executive Director Tony Carrk.“They’re raking in thousands while cutting funding for healthcare, education, and food assistance, and breaking campaign promises to lower costs. Hardworking Americans can’t get ahead when Republicans in Congress are too busy looking out for themselves—we need to cancel the cuts and invest in healthcare.”
